The travel world is a buzz right now about , 2017 is expected to be a record setting year and we are happy to say that we became part of it recently by making our way to its colonial cities, pristine beaches and wild countryside.

We drove into Nicaragua from . Crossing the border was not too bad compared to many other land crossings. It took around an hour and a half on both sides. While the process was straightforward we were bothered by the expectation of some agents to be given a dollar to speed up their work. These are practices which will only hold back the progress of tourism and transparency. 

 

Luxury Resort Mukul

We made our first stop in Nicaragua at Mukul. This is a signature resort on the Pacific where some of the country’s top investors are modeling the type of tourism infrastructure the country is capable of. The hotel had great service and a stunning resort for leisure.

 

Colonial Granada

The first city we visited is a former capital and it is a gem. The colonial architecture, boutique hotels, fantastic churches, restaurants, scenic lake views and cultural displays are treasured here. The town has a real ancient charm and it is wonderfully preserved. It was a little overcrowded with tourists at times, but wonderfully panoramic. 

 

Cosmopolitan Managua

We drove through the capital city on our way further North. It has wide boulevards, volcanoes and lakes in the backdrop as well as some first class restaurants and malls. The hills in the city offer some fantastic neighborhoods with scenic views.

 

Classical Leon

It is possible to see a really authentic side of Nicaragua in a colonial town like Leon. It is a city on the plains which has a unique history associated with the country’s political strife. It is full of monuments, churches and it sits along the famous lake and volcano route. We loved staying here and biking the roads out of town which lead us to the dramatic and wild coast.

 

Surfer’s Paradise: San Juan del Sur

On our way back we stopped at one of Nicaragua’s more famous beaches for a relaxed and carefree lifestyle. San Juan del Sur is a place for partiers, trekkers and water sports enthusiasts to gather for affordable and good vibes.

We think Nicaragua is an amazing place with wonderful food, friendly people and lots of natural beauty and culture to share. Going soon would be a great opportunity to see this new destination as the authentic and beautiful gem that it is.
