Budapest offers both relaxation and culture in its refined thermal spas

We love the experience of Spas in Budapest because there is so much variety to enjoy, the walls and ceilings are adorned with beautiful mosaics and art deco, the facilities are well staffed and clean and the pools are filled with mineral waters of every temperature. Overall they create an enjoyable environment of relaxation in a palatial looking spa.

The bath culture of Budapest is one of the first that drew us to the city. Here it is not just a small, rare experience but the over 1000 thermal water sites which lie along the Danube River have formed the heart of Hungarian hospitality with various spas, and treatment centers.

With so many places available there are all ranges of experiences. There are very unique and boutique wellness centers, places for large groups of tourists on the cheap and everything in between.

Hotel Gellert: a local favorite

Our experience over the years has really firmed up our spa of choice to be the historic Hotel Gellert. It has been a place of enjoyment since the middle ages but the hotel site as it stands today is over a hundred years old. It is open to the public, but the layout of the place, its upkeep and association with the hotel keep it more exclusive and clean. A day pass will run around $15 USD per person on the weekends and slightly less expensive on weekdays.

Hotel Gellert is around 1km from the heart of the downtown so it is easily reached walking, by the metro or any form of . Once we bought a ticket we walked through a series of underground hallways till we reached the locker rooms. They sell cabins too along with traditional lockers, so you can even bring luggage and backpacks to leave in your own private changing area if you wish. We found the whole process very easy because there were abundant hotel staff helping us navigate the facilities.

The complex has a main indoor pool for laps and exercise, three sitting pools at various temperatures, it also includes saunas and plunge pools. Outside there are sunning decks and an open-air swimming pool which can create artificial waves every 30 minutes and an effervescent swimming pool. There are massages and more advanced treatments available too for purchase.
